Campfire ban coming for the District of Sechelt

Sunshine Coast Fire Departments are putting a ban in place June 20th for all fires, including campfires.

Sechelt Fire Chief Trevor Pike said the department has been busy with unattended beach fires and brush fires and there’s a need to reduce the risks.

In the Coastal Fire Centre, since the end of May, Category 2 open burns have been prohibited to reduce wildfire risks and protect public safety but campfires are allowed.

Local government bylaws, however, can set different bans if conditions warrant them.

In the meantime, Pike is asking residents to fire smart their property.

“This is the new risk on the Sunshine Coast here. In the past, it hasn’t been so much but I really, truly believe that wildland fires are rising to the top of our bigger list area and it’s time that we all address it and start to plan for it.”

Pike said everyone, especially households in more remote areas should fire smart their properties.

You can get a manual on how to do that online through the Office of the Fire Commissioner, or from your local fire hall.
