Spring sitting wraps up

The MLA for the Sunshine Coast Powell River says 18 pieces of legislation were passed during the spring sitting of the legislature which has wrapped up.

Nicolas Simons said they included changes to the rezoning process for Agricultural Land Reserve property.

Now, if a property owner wants to remove land from the ALR they will apply directly with their local government who will, if it’s approved, pass the recommendation on to the Agricultural Land Commission.

Simons said another important piece of legislation dealt with changes to the labour code to protect child labour.

The province made amendments to the Employment Standards Act, to raise the working age for children.

Simons said the very first BC Green Party bill passed as well.

That bill is the first opposition private member’s bill in B.C. history to ever pass.

It enables a new class of business called benefit corporations that want to pursue environmental and social goals in addition to their primary objective of profit.
