Natural History Society gets another 20 year lease

The District of Sechelt has agreed to sub-let the Sechelt Marsh property to the Sunshine Coast Natural History Society for another 20 years.

The property was purchased by the Natures Trust Society back in 1979 who leased it to the District for a period of 99 years.

In 1999 the History Society was granted a sub-lease for a 20 year period and since that time has managed the maintenance and development of the property in co-operation with the District.

Earlier this year the Society said the repairs and maintenance of the Marsh were beyond their capacity so the District agreed to take on the regular maintenance of the property.

That allowed the main focus of the Society to shift to providing education, stewardship and preservation but members will continue to provide assistance with maintenance projects through volunteer opportunities.
