Measles cases continue to trickle in

Island Health is investigating another suspected case of measles on the South Island.

All Health Units in Island Health are currently offering additional booked school age immunization appointments.

South Island, Duncan, Nanaimo, and Salt Spring Public Health Units are prioritizing immunizations for children.

In the past nine weeks, Island Health has administered over 4,900 measles vaccinations, double what was administered the previous year.

The Sunshine Coast School District is reporting Vancouver Coastal Health will be contacting all non-immunized students.

It’s in an attempt to stop the spread of the current measles outbreak on the lower mainland.

Vancouver Coastal Health is reporting that, based on their records, 83 per cent of school-aged children are fully protected, but those whose records are incomplete will be contacted.

Full protection includes two doses of the MMR vaccine, one at one year of age and one when the child is in kindergarten.
