Local recycler calls MMBC a bad deal

The owner of the Sunshine Coast’s biggest resource recovery operation says Multi-Material BC is a bad deal.

The province-wide program for recycling printed material and packaging started rolling out this week.

Buddy Boyd’s company, Gibsons Recycling, collects recyclables on behalf of the Regional District and will be bound by MMBC’s rules.

Boyd says MMBC is the latest in a string of similar programs, covering everything from electronics to paint and motor oil, and with each one more costs are being downloaded to companies like his.

Boyd is predicting that under MMBC a confused public will actually end up recycling less, and materials that could be sold for re-use locally will now have to be turned over to MMBC.

He says the bottom line is that control is being taken away from communities in exchange for a cheque that’s not even big enough to cover the costs.
