EMBC says Seawatch is a complicated issue

While emergency social services are available to residents who have had to evacuate as a result of sinkholes in the community of Seawatch in Sechelt, there’s not much more Emergency Management B.C. will be doing to help.

Emergency Management B.C. has declined an interview and only issued a statement with regards to the situation.

The province says decisions surrounding evacuation alerts and orders are made by the local authority responsible for emergency management in that municipality or region.

When an evacuation order is put in place as it will be today (Fri) at one o’clock, the province says it will provide up to 72 hours of emergency social services to potential evacuees.

Those services may include food, lodging, clothing, and emotional support for residents forced from their homes.

The Ministry says this is a complicated situation that has been developing over a number of years and they’ve recommended the local authority contact the municipal insurance association and reach out to the Insurance Bureau of Canada to see what may be provided to homeowners.
