New Mayors on the Sunshine Coast

Although the results aren’t official, Darnelda Siegers and Bill Beamish are expected to be the new Mayors in their respective communities.

In Sechelt, it was a three-person race.

Siegers received more than 2500 votes while incumbent Mayor Bruce Milne received over 1100 and Allan Toth got just under 500.

“This isn’t just my win, this my team and community’s win,” said Darnelda Siegers, who served as a councillor during the previous term.

“Going into this election I wanted to make sure that we kept it positive. Made sure we stayed focused on the future and no matter what came at me, that I was going to treat with everyone with respect and I believe those things were achieved.”

As far as councillors go preliminary numbers show Janice Kuester, Thomas Lamb, Matt McLean, Brenda Rowe, Eric Scott and Alton Toth will be joining Siegers on council.

For the Town of Gibsons, Bill Beamish received more than 1300 votes to become the next Mayor.

“I’m very appreciative of everyone who ran for council and I’m looking forward to working with the new council,” said Beamish, who wants to hit the ground running.

“Top of everyone’s minds during the campaign was affordable housing. That’s the first thing we have to address. We need to look at the options that we have and how we can as a council work with the community and BC housing to figure a solution.”

Incumbent Stafford Lumley is expected to join Beamish on council along with David A Croal, Annemarie De Andrade and Aleria A Ladwig.
