Fisheries and Oceans has closed the area around the Sunshine Coast to most shellfish harvesting because of red tide.
People have reported unusually large blooms and even discoloured areas on beaches, leading some to speculate about oil spills. It’s not that, however, DFO officials are also saying the blooms aren’t connected to the red tide warnings either.
Elisha Gordon of DFO says it’s a non-toxic plankton.
The plankton blooms have also been seen in the Ladysmith area.
