Heavy smell of smoke on the Sunshine Coast not caused by local fire

Although the smell of smoke has many Sunshine Coast residents on alert, the smoke isn’t from an active local fire.

Instead, it is believed the smoke is coming from the East Redonda fire that’s north of Powell River.

“We had someone from the Coastal Fire Centre come in today, and that’s what the belief is right now,” said Trevor Pike, Chief of the Sechelt Fire Department.

“If there was an active fire on the Sunshine Coast we’d be aware of it. We have an initial response team organized in Sechelt and we have an agreement with forestry to provide initial attack services if necessary, and we haven’t been deployed.”

According to the BC Wildfire Service, the wildfire on East Redonda Island is still active and about 200 hectares.
