New association aims to bring more boaters to local waters

Around 30-thousand pleasure boaters visit Georgia Strait every year, but the BC Ocean Boating Tourism Association wants to boost that number.

Chair David Mailloux says the new organization wants to tap into what could be a new source of tourism dollars.

Mailloux says the needs that need to addressed include making sure there’s enough moorage are in marinas and harbours up and down the coast.

He says the goal of the BCOBTA is to work with marinas, tourism groups and local governments to create a viable product to market to pleasure boaters in the States.

They’ve been contacting local governments for letters for support as they try to round up funding to get the ball rolling.  The BCOBTA is holding its first board meeting this week.
