Death toll continues to rise as a result of fentanyl in our communities

There were 823 illicit drug overdose deaths with fentanyl detected from January through August 2017.
That’s a 151 per cent increase over the number of fentanyl detected deaths over the same period in 2016.
The Fraser Health Authority had the highest number of illicit drug overdose deaths with fentanyl detected from January through to of August 2017, followed by Vancouver Coastal Health with 238 and the Vancouver Island Health Authority with 141.
In Nanaimo, 28 people have died after using drugs laced with fentanyl this year.
That compares to 21 in all of 2016.
