Investigation continues after Westwood Lake incident

One person remains in hospital after being pulled unconscious from Westwood Lake.

It happened just after 3 Tuesday afternoon.

By the time a Nanaimo Fire Rescue crew got to the Lake bystanders were already trying to help the two men, who’d been fishing when their aluminum boat capsized.

Greg Norman is an assistant chief with Nanaimo Fire Rescue. “Nanaimo Fire Rescue arrived on scene to find two residents assisting people in the water as a result of a capsized boat. The crews are trained in water rescue and immediately launched the boat arriving quickly to retrieve and get the victims to land,” he says.

The unconscious man was airlifted to hospital, and there’s been no update on his condition.  The other man was treated at NRGH.

There’s no word on whether they were wearing life jackets.  With warm weather here Nanaimo Fire Rescue is reminding people to think safety when on or near the water.

The last drowning at the Lake involved a young girl in 2010. A Coroner’s report and internal review led to several changes to how the swimming area is supervised.
