Boat Basin fees going up as NPA begins improvement project
Rates for marina users in Nanaimo are going up in January, as the Nanaimo Port Authority prepares to start work on some improvements.
NPA President Bernie Dumas says the Boat Basin needs to start making money, instead of losing it.
Dumas says they’ve come up with some ideas about how they want to upgrade the marina, including putting up a new crane for the commercial fishing boats. The NPA hopes to start in the fall of 2014. The project will take 3 to 5 years to complete and cost up to 6 million dollars.
In April, a controversial agreement that would have seen a private company upgrade the Boat Basin at its own expense in exchange for a long term lease and management deal was abandoned
