Simons, the MLA for Powell River Sunshine Coast, says prime farmland is now at risk of industrial development.
The government’s plan splits the Commission into two zones. For Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast, Lower Mainland and the Okanagan things will stay the same for now.
But in the Interior, North and Kootenays the Commission can now consider “social and economic needs” in making decisions, and not just the need to preserve farmland.
Simons says he’s especially angry that all this is being done without any public consultation.
