Hackers and makers getting their own spaces to flourish in Nanaimo/Sunshine Coast

Makers… Hackers… Inventors…

They go by a lot of names these days, and they’re coming together to share ideas and work on projects that range from tinkering with robotics to creating new commercial products.

Bhak Jolicoeur  is one of the driving forces behind the Gibsons Hack Space.  They’re just finalizing a deal for a location at 1132 Seamount and building their membership.

Jolicoeur says there’s a growing interest these days in reconnecting with some of the skills and do-it-yourself thinking that used to be part of everyday life.

Another group on the Sunshine Coast, Coast Makers, is holding their first meeting March 20th at the Youth Centre in Sechelt.  They’re getting some help from the Gibsons Chamber of Commerce.

Nanaimo’s “Makerspace”, meanwhile, is a little further along.  They’ll be opening April 1st at 2221 McGarrigle Road.  Rebecca Kirk is with the Nanaimo Makerspace Association
