Demonstrators pan George project

Protestors braved blustery weather in Gibsons to voice opposition to plans for a waterfront hotel conference centre.

The George will be the subject of a public hearing, but Council is waiting for draft bylaws and reports on things like environmental impact before moving to that stage.

In the meantime, opinion in the town continues to be divided.

At least 200 people attended the outdoor or indoor portions of Saturday’s protest.

Speakers at the demonstration also claimed the campaign to put signs in favour of the project at some local businesses violates the Town’s sign bylaw section against third party advertising.

As the protest was going on, backers of the project launched a new Facebook page – “We Support The George” – encouraging residents and businesses to post pictures of those signs.
