Name change proposed for St. Mary's Hospital

It’s got a new ER, a new patient tower, and St. Mary’s Hospital in Sechelt could soon have a new name. Vancouver Coastal Health says it’s getting ready to launch a community consultation after hearing from the Sechelt First Nation that a name change is long overdue. It’s on land the Band donated, but shares a name with a former residential school on their territory.

Clay Adams of Vancouver Coastal Health says there have already been talks on the issue. But the first time most people heard about it was after a special showing of a documentary on residential schools.

Adams says the consultation is needed because they’ll have to make a strong case to the province, which has the ultimate say on a new name. Adams says the final step in the consultation will be an open house at the end of March.
