(Update for 8:45 am Feb 25th)
The snow is over, and although the clean up continues, schools are open with a few exceptions.
VIU says all campuses are open. All schools in School District 69 (Qualicum) are open and buses are running, although there may be some delays due to road conditions. It’s another PD Day in the Nanaimo Ladysmith School District, except at Wellington and Woodlands secondary; those schools are open. Officials with School District 46 on the Sunshine Coast say they’re opening all schools except Cedar Grove which has no power. However, there will be no bus service to Bonniebrook, upper and lower Roberts Creek west of Roberts Creek Road or Halfmoon Bay. And in the Tuwanek area buses will wait at the top of Sandy Hook Road
Thousands remain without power on both the mid-Island and Sunshine Coast.
The biggest outages are on Gabriola Island, Halfmoon Bay, between Wilson Creek and Roberts Creek and in Gibsons. Those account for about 6 thousand customers, and there are dozens of smaller outages.
BC Hydro is still estimating most Sunshine Coast customers will be back on the grid late this morning, but it could be into the evening for people on Gabriola and around Nanaimo.
On the roads, Highways 19, 19A and 1 have slushy and slippery sections, with some compact snow north of Nanaimo. Highway 101 on the Sunshine Coast has been cleared, but still has some slippery sections
Many side roads are still snow covered, and icy. Crews expect to get to those routes early today.
