Area MPs applaud Trudeau government’s throne speech

MPs in our area say it was easy to applaud the Trudeau government’s first throne speech on Friday.

In it, the government promised an inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women and girls.

Nanaimo-Ladysmith NDP MP Sheila Malcolmson says that’s great but weren’t many details, and nothing about health care.

The speech also included a promise to do away with the controversial omnibus bills favoured by the Harper Conservatives. Liberal Pamela Goldsmith Jones of West Vancouver Sunshine Coast says that sends a real message about how they’ll be a different kind of government.

The speech also highlighted immediate priorities like a tax cut for the middle class, and meeting the Supreme Court’s requirement for new legislation on assisted dying.
