Dope detente in Nanaimo, as deadline for dispensaries passes

Nanaimo RCMP’s deadline for 10 cannabis dispensaries in the city to close or be closed has passed, with no sign yet of an RCMP crack down.

A “cease and desist” notice was delivered to 10 marijuana dispensaries November 12th.

Members of the Nanaimo Cannabis Coalition met with mayor Bill Mckay on the 19th (the deadline day).

The Coalition’s Akil Pessoa posted a statement after the meeting saying they plan to “…ignore the RCMP for now, and focus on working within the democratic process.”

That means trying to get Council’s support for a three point plan to license and regulate the shops.

Pessoa told Coast FM earlier the key point in that plan is a program for product quality control and safety among member dispensaries.

City Council did not take a formal position on the idea, after hearing a delegation from the Coalition at its meeting on the 16th.
