Sechelt Council hears case to regulate dispensaries, as deadline to close or be closed looms in Nanaimo

Some sympathy, but no promise of action, after Sechelt Council heard from a local marijuana dispensary operator Wednesday night.

Michelle Sikora of S & M Medicinal Sweet Shoppe says Sechelt should move to license and regulate dispensaries, in part to protect small, locally-based, operations.

“We already have one chain dispensary from Vancouver and more wanting to come,” she says. “That is why it is imperitive more than ever that the District of Sechelt take a pro-active approach to regulating and licensing dispensaries, now.”

Mayor Bruce Milne says Council recognizes that marijuana is beneficial for some people, but under the current federal laws the District can’t open the door.

“The District of Sechelt has taken a position that it’s not actually in our jurisdiction,” Milne says. “The RCMP has taken the lead on this, but we are watching the events in other municipalities and federally and we know the landscape is changing.”
