Coastal Fire Centre expands burning bans as danger ratings climb

The Coastal Fire Centre has expanded its burning ban as a result of the continuing warm, dry weather.

Fire Information officer Marg Drysdale says they’re now banning Category 2 and 3 fires; which are the typical backyard burns AND bigger industrial burns that require permits.

She says as far as a campfire prohibition, we’re good through the weekend at least. And what happens after that depends on people as much as the weather.

Fire danger ratings are now at high for most of the Island and Sunshine Coast, and extreme in some places between Nanaimo and Duncan.

Coastal Fire Centre rules apply to Crown Land and parks, or anywhere there aren’t already local bylaws.
