Finish line for World Championship Bathtub Race moved to Maffeo Sutton Park

The Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society is taking this year’s World Championship Bathtub Race in a bit of a new direction.

For the first time in the event’s 48-year history, the race will start and finish in the same place.

Commodore Bill McGuire says they’re excited about moving the finish line from Departure Bay to Maffeo Sutton Park. McGuire says it’ll be easier for more spectators to enjoy.

He says it’s a change that was brought about thanks to some fresh ideas from new society members.

McGuire says tubbers will ring the bell at the finish line beneath the statue of iconic mayor Frank Ney, who helped invent the sport of bathtub racing.

He says the race will start at 11:15am this year instead of 11:00am, as per the recommendation of the Nanaimo Port Authority.

This year’s Marine Festival is set for July 23rd to the 26th.
