Nanaimo considering fully automated garbage trucks

Nanaimo’s sanitation department wants to see fully automated garbage trucks replace the city’s old fleet.

The trucks would be able to lift and dump bins, lightening the load for garbage collectors.

Charlotte Davis is the Manager of Sanitation, Recycling and Public Works.

Davis says it would cost about $6.4 million to replace the old garbage trucks and provide residents with the wheeled bins required. But she says, after three years, the City would start seeing annual savings.

Mayor Bill McKay says he sees how the move would be beneficial on several levels.
