Big turnout for SIB community meeting in Pender Harbour

A big crowd in Pender Harbour over the weekend to hear the Sechelt First Nation outline their history in the area, and their plans to exert more authority over their traditional lands.

Concerns have been raised over an attempt to build a long house on park land, and the SIB’s desire to have control over dock permits.

Frank Mauro is the Sunshine Coast Regional District Director for Pender Harbour.

A handful of representatives of a group calling themselves the Pender Harbour Indian Band – which is challenging Sechelt’s claim to parts of the area – and from a group of landowners worried about land claims were on hand.

Sechelt Chief Calvin Craigan says he’s open to meeting with those groups.
