Tragedy in front of Cedar Secondary Monday night.

Nanaimo RCMP Constable Gary O’Brien says a 17 year-old student was longboarding along Macmillan Road when he was hit head-on by flat deck pick up and killed.

O’Brien says he was travelling as he was supposed to; like a pedestrian and facing traffic, but there’s very little lighting in the area and he was wearing non-reflective clothing.

O’Brien says those visibility issues were likely contributing factors, and investigators have ruled out speed or alcohol.

The 28 year-old driver stayed at the scene following the accident and is cooperating with police.

The name of the victim is not being released at this time.
