Malahat Safety Improvement Project done ahead of schedule

The Malahat Safety Improvement Project is finished ahead of schedule.
The $15 million project involved widening 2.3 kilometres of Highway 1 from Shawnigan Lake Road to the summit, so a new median barrier could be added. Now more than half the Malahat has a median barrier.
Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Todd Stone says it’ll make the route safer for the 22,000 people who travel the highway every day.
The project also included intersection upgrades, improvements to passing lanes and the addition of some U-turn locations. The Malahat Summit Rest Area has also been re-opened, with extra parking and new lighting.
“This safety upgrade to the Malahat portion of Highway 1 has improved the beautiful mountain drive between Victoria and the rest of Vancouver Island, making it a safer connection for everyone living in, working in, or visiting our region,” says Parksville-Qualicum MLA Michelle Stilwell.
