Budget talks begin in Nanaimo

Lengthy budget talks lie ahead for Nanaimo Councillors. They got a look at the draft 2015 budget last night, and they’ll start a detailed review on Wednesday.

It has to be finalized by May 15 but Councillor Bill Bestwick said that seems a bit late, considering five months of the year will already be in the books. He suggested they get a jump on the 2016 budget and have it finalized by the end of December.

But City Manager Ted Swabey said that’s ambitious, at best.

Meanwhile, other Councillors expressed concerns about the size of the budget increasing quicker than the rate of inflation. It’s now up to more than $200 million.
