Nanaimo City Council puts Empire Days grant on "hold"

Empire Days could soon be a thing of the past in Nanaimo, or at least the name could be, if the event hopes to get funding from the City.

2 cultural grants for the Empire Days Celebration Society — worth just over 5-thousand dollars — were rejected by Council Monday night.

Councillor Bill Yoachim, who’s also served on the Snuneymuxw First Nation band council, outlined Snuneymuxw’s long standing unease with the Empire Days name.

He says he can’t support the grant unless there’s a change.  But he also welcomes giving them a chance to make that change before rejecting the grants completely.

The money is being held for now, and the City is going to approach the Society about changing the name of the event before making a final decision.
