ARSBC sets a date to sink the Annapolis

The Artificial Reef Society has set January 17th as the date to sink the former HMCS Annapolis to create a reef off Gambier Island.

There’s been opposition to the plan from some Gambier residents as well as the the Islands Trust and some conservation groups who say it will have negative environmental impacts.

But, ARSBC president Howie Robins says this is the “cleanest” ship they’ve ever sunk, and it will create valuable habitat, in part because of the unique design of the ship.

Robins says Annapolis will also become a “living lab” in Howe Sound, in cooperation with the Vancouver Aquarium.
