Island Health spending $12.3 million more to help people with mental health and substance use issues

Island Health is increasing the services they offer to help people struggling with mental health and substance use issues. They’ll be spending $12.3 million more in 2015.

Kelly Reid, a Director with Island Health, says the money will be used for 28 new substance use beds and 14 new tertiary mental health care beds across the Island.

Reid says they’re also setting up three new intensive case management teams and a new assertive community treatment team to help clients recovering from serious mental illnesses and addictions.

Reid says Island Health’s 2014/2015 budget for mental health and substance use issues is $186 million.
