Gabriola Island is transitioning to a greener means of transportation.
As part of a $1.7 million Federal Government investment across British Columbia, Gabriola will buy two new electric buses to replace their diesel ones in commission, as well as two electric vehicle chargers.
Chair of the Regional District of Nanaimo Board (RDN) Vanessa Craig said it’s an exciting step to help lower the community’s carbon footprint.
“The addition of two electric buses to the Gabriola Community Bus Foundation’s fleet is an exciting and significant step towards supporting a reliable, even lower-carbon transit option on Gabriola.”
Squamish, Stellat’en, Xatsull First Nations, and Xaay Daga Dlaang Society will also buy new vehicles.
Other First Nations and regional districts around B.C. will undergo transit studies and planning projects to help establish better transit options for their communities.
The Federal investment is meant to support infrastructure, transit studies, planning projects, and vehicle purchases.
