With the onset of winter weather, the city says they have amped up warming stations with extended hours to help keep the most vulnerable out of the cold.
Three warming stations have already been funded by the city. They offer access to basic needs, health and social service navigation support.
In an email, social planning manager Christy Wood says the warming stations on Victoria Road, Prideaux Street, and Bowen Road can expand their hours when extreme weather meets the threshold requirements set by the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness and when funding is available.
“Expanded hours will vary depending on daily staffing availability,” she says. “It is anticipated some overnight services, and early openings, may be available through the existing warming centres.
“We are working closely with our warming centres operators and counterparts at EMCR to ensure we can activate once the EMCR weather thresholds are met.”
She adds warming services are in addition to the current day-use services and overnight shelters found on their website.
