A new program at Vancouver Island University is being launched to help students increase their literacy development, especially in a post-pandemic society.
Dr. Ana Vieria is an education professor at VIU and says the brain is designed for speech and in order for someone to learn how to write and read they must rewire their brain.
Vieria says having increased literacy is more important now because it is becoming a major social justice issue and the pandemic interrupted how people learn these important skills.
“Teachers are facing a crisis post-COVID in trying to help students catch-up after learning was interrupted,” she says.
In launching the program, the school hopes to help cover complex literacy learning along with typical and atypical literacy development as well as a variety of other topics to improve the foundations of the learning process.
The program will launch next month and takes students through a two-year hybrid curriculum.
