Affordable housing project in Gibsons moving along

The Sunshine Coast Affordable Housing Society is pushing ahead on plans for an affordable housing complex on Shaw Road.

Chair of the Board for the Society, Dion Whyte said when council decided on the new location on Shaw Road, as opposed to the Charman Creek land, they didn’t have to go completely back to square one but they will have to do some work over again.

“The first things that have to happen is, we need to understand the land that we are now working on, hence the need for the survey, we are also in the process of engaging with our environmental consultant that will be going back in, as we did on the Charman lands, and conduct an ecological assessment of the site.”

Whyte said some of the information from the traffic study will still apply and once the Society has done its due diligence and developed new concepts, the feasibility study, and cost, they will apply to the different levels of government for funding.

He said they’ve also got to apply to Gibsons to rezone the land.

Whyte hopes the project will have the green light by the end of this year.
