Work to appoint a human rights commissioner underway

New Democrat MLA Sheila Malcolmson has been elected Chair of the Special Committee to Appoint a Human Rights Commissioner.

Malcolmson, newly minted MLA for Nanaimo says 16 years ago, the provincial Liberals shut our Humans Rights Commission down, leaving BC the only province in Canada without one.

The new B.C. Human Rights Commission will be the first in Canada to be fully independent of government.

The Commissioner will report directly to the legislature, ensuring there is no governmental influence over activities.

They will educate British Columbians on human rights, as well as examine and address issues of discrimination.
