Community supports idea of homeless shelter being at Upper Deck Guesthouse

There’s strong support for a homeless shelter to be placed at the Upper Deck Guesthouse in Sechelt. After a third public hearing that was organized by BC housing on the issue, a majority of residents who showed up were supportive and the shelter could be open up in a couple of weeks.

Tanya Hall, Operator of the Upper Deck says they’re closing one door after nearly 15 years in business, but excited to open up another one for people.

In the meantime, the District of Sechelt is trying to speed up the process so the hostel can be used as a shelter.

Angela Lettman, Sechelt’s Development Planner says the rezoning process takes time and if council is in favour of the first reading tomorrow tonight (Wed) then they can move forward.

Third and fourth reading and adoption would happen on December 20th and the shelter could open up the following day.
