The City of Nanaimo’s attempt to pursue an alternate course of action to remediate the Colliery Dams has been shot down by the Dam Safety Section… at least according to Mayor Bill Mckay.
He says the City is being told to pick one of two options and have the work done by November, despite a motion passed by Council in an 8-3 vote Monday that lays out a different way forward.
And, McKay says it’s time to stop arguing about whether the kind of severe weather event that could cause the dams to fail will ever happen.
McKay says the City could face fines if it doesn’t comply with the provincial order. He says Council has done its best to make the wishes of residents heard in Victoria, and now their priority should be the duty to protect the City from legal consequences.
Although McKay says the City needs to get moving, the application for a stay of the remediation order is still going ahead.
The Environmental Appeal Board is expected to hand down a decision on the stay in early July.
