Fire Centre moves to Category 2 burning ban

A Category 2 open burns are now banned in the Coastal Fire Centre zone.

Category 2 fires are the larger backyard burns, and things like burning barrels.

The ban won’t apply to campfires.

With the dry weather lately, forecasters are predicting a busy wildfire season.

Fire Information Officer Donna MacPherson says there haven’t been a lot more fires so far, but they have been noticing something a little unusual.

Coastal Fire Centre bans apply on Crown Land, or when there aren’t muncipal or local fire department regulations already in place.

It’s recommended you check your local rules before doing any burning.

Other things covered by Category 2 are:

* The burning of stubble or grass fires over an area less than 2,000
square metres.
* The use of fireworks, firecrackers, sky lanterns, burning barrels or
burning cages of any size or description.
* The use of binary exploding targets (e.g., for rifle target
practice).
