George passes first reading at Gibsons Council

A controversial waterfront hotel project in Gibsons got a vote of confidence from Town Council Tuesday night… but a cautious one.

The vote followed a review of geotechnical reports showing that with modifications to The George – including a slight increase in height – the aquifer would be protected. But, they also show more study is needed.

Councillor Stafford Lumley calls aquifer protection a deal breaker.

Councillor Jeremy Valeriote also has some reservations around the proposed height.

Mayor Wayne Rowe says support at this stage, is the only way to guarantee that happens.

Rowe, and several in the gallery, expressed frustration as a vote was delayed by debate on amendments and apparent uncertainty from some Councillors.

In the end it was unanimous.

The project still has to clear several hurdles and face a public hearing before a final decision.
