A plan to use something called biochar to filter trace levels of things like pharmaceuticals out of Sechelt’s waste water is getting the thumbs-down from a Council committee.
The proposal on the table is to create the special charcoal at the new treatment plant, using the bio-solids left behind in the treatment process.
Councillor Doug Wright says it’s an interesting idea, but not one local governments should be pursuing.
The full Council will still get a chance to vote on the proposal.
And Darnelda Siegers is indicating she’ll support it. She says the pilot project is a key element in being able to use the treated water for agricultural or industrial purposes.
If it goes ahead, 50 per cent of the cost would be covered through a grant from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
