It looks like the standoff between the City of Nanaimo and the province’s Dam Safety Section will continue.
The majority of Councillors have backed a motion to appeal the DSS order to choose between two ideas for remediating the dams by May 1st, and instead offer up a different solution.
Councillor Jim Kipp presented a proposal from a company called GSI Engineering, to essentially reinforce the edges of the lower dam and raise the spillway.
Councillor Bill Bestwick says it’s worth a shot
Kipp says the GSI solution would save millions, but City Manager Ted Swabey warned Councillors that appealing the Dam Safety Section’s order could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
