Simons says case of teen stranded after missing ferry symptom of a growing problem

Powell River Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons is taking up the cause of a Sunshine Coast teen left stranded after narrowly missing the cut off for the last ferry home.

The inflexibility of BC Ferries’ cut off times is a long-standing issue.

Simons says this case is particularly galling, because the boy is a fencer and the only way he can compete is by travelling to Vancouver.

He’s written the Transportation Minister, but he’s not that optimistic it will lead anywhere.

Simons says the government should make sure BC Ferries gives its employees more discretion to exercise “common sense and humanity.”  But he says the province seems to want it both ways when it comes to setting policy for Ferries.  They’ll tell Ferries what to do when it makes them look good, but other times they’ll claim the can’t tell a private company how to run its business.
