Construction has started on a new six-storey long-term care home in Lantzville that will provide 298 long-term care beds and 18 hospice beds when completed in 2029.
“As more seniors need long-term care, investments like this help people stay close to their families and communities,” said Bowinn Ma, minister of infrastructure. “This new home will provide quality care in the Nanaimo region while we also work to drive down per-bed costs to support the delivery of more projects in communities across the province.”
The facility will also include an adult day program to support independent living and 37 child-care spaces.
The province is providing $236 million toward the $350-million project, while the Nanaimo Regional Hospital District is contributing $114 million.
The facility will also include a hair salon, self-serve refreshment area, activity and event spaces and outdoor spaces.
“It is critical to the quality of life of residents of long-term care and their families that living environments support hope, choice and meaning,” said Dr. Margaret Manville, medical director of long-term care, Island Health. “It is equally critical for staff, physicians and nurse practitioners that their workplace enables excellent care, co-operation and community. We aspire to achieve both these aims.”
