Police investigate after semi backs into, kills person at downtown gas station

Nanaimo RCMP are investigating a fatal collision involving a pedestrian and a fuel truck downtown.

Police responded to the Mid-Island Co-op gas bar on Victoria Crescent around 6:46 a.m. Sept. 16 after receiving a report that a person had been struck by a semi-truck.

Police said the tanker truck was backing into the parking lot when it struck a person seated or lying near the curb between the sidewalk and parking lot, near the vehicle entrance to the property.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and investigators were working to notify the person’s family.

“The circumstances surrounding this tragic incident remain under investigation, and investigators are gathering evidence to determine exactly what occurred,” said Staff Sergeant Kris Clark of the B.C. RCMP.

The BC Coroners Service is also investigating.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has footage of it to contact the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line.
