Sunshine Coast Regional District says campfires still allowed

The Sunshine Coast Regional District says there is currently no campfire ban in effect in areas served by SCRD fire departments.

The regional district says any decision to implement a ban follows guidance from the BC Wildfire Service.

“Several factors are considered when determining whether restrictions are necessary, including current wildfire risk, weather conditions and forecasts, and conditions leading up to the current period,” reads an SCRD news release. “While a campfire ban is not in place at this time, wildfire conditions can change quickly and residents are reminded that everyone has a role to play in preventing wildfires.”

A campfire is defined as a fire no larger than half a metre high and half a metre wide.

The SCRD is reminding residents that fire departments across the region are trained and prepared to respond if wildfire threatens communities.

Residents are also being reminded to check the SCRD website for current fire restrictions.
