Updated: Highway reopens after motorcycle collision south of Nanaimo

Nanamio RCMP say both southbound lanes are now open and an investigation into the collision is ongoing.

Update: RCMP say both southbound lanes are expected to remain closed until at least 1:30 p.m. The northbound lane has opened.

Police say a man was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries after running into the back of an SUV while riding a motorcycle. The SUV driver was not injured.

Multiple lanes on the Trans-Canada Highway at the intersection with Nanaimo River Road were closed Tuesday morning following a collision involving an SUV and a motorcycle.

Nanaimo RCMP said the crash happened at about 10 a.m. Both southbound lanes and one northbound lane were closed.

“Police, Fire and BCEHS are on scene and an Air Ambulance is expected to land momentarily,” reads an RCMP news release. “Investigators will attempt to reroute traffic, however their primary concern is to ensure a safe landing zone for the air ambulance.”
