RDN looks for feedback on mobile home redevelopment policy

The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking public feedback on proposed changes to its manufactured home redevelopment policy.

The regional district said the policy is intended to protect tenants of manufactured home parks when a rezoning application is submitted for redevelopment.

“The policy changes aim to improve fairness, transparency and tenant protections, while supporting landlords in meeting their obligations under the Provincial Manufactured Home Park Tenancy Act,” said the RDN in a news release. “Changes include stronger notice requirements, compensation, relocation help and housing agreements to secure units at below market rates.”

The policy applies only to manufactured home parks where a rezoning application has been submitted for redevelopment. The RDN said there are currently no such applications and none are anticipated.

The current policy was adopted in 2006. The proposed updates would align it with current regulations and best practices.

“Redevelopment can result in the displacement of residents with limited housing alternatives and many older manufactured homes cannot be relocated,” the RDN said.

An online survey is open until Aug. 29. The proposed policy will then be presented to the RDN board for final consideration.
