Two teenagers were treated for non-life-threatening injuries after they were struck in a crosswalk near Nanaimo’s Departure Bay Beach.
Nanaimo RCMP said the incident happened around 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 28, and driver inattention was determined to be the cause of the collision.
“Pedestrian safety is a shared responsibility. Drivers should reduce distractions, scan intersections carefully, and be prepared to stop when approaching marked and unmarked crosswalks,” said Inspector Donovan Tait, operations officer for the Nanaimo RCMP.
The teens, aged 13 and 16, were crossing the road at the crosswalk at Bay Street and Departure Bay Road when they were hit by a Ford Mustang driven by a 40-year-old.
Police said the driver co-operated with investigators and that speed, alcohol and drugs were ruled out as contributing factors.
The driver was issued a ticket for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
