Registration open for Nanaimo soapbox derby, sponsors and volunteers needed

Registration is now open for Nanaimo’s annual soap box derby, with racers set to hit Wall Street on Aug. 15.

The event will feature homebuilt, gravity-powered cars competing to raise money for the Child Development Centre Nanaimo.

Children and adults can take part.

The stock division is open to racers aged six to 16, with participants building their carts using kits supplied as part of the entry fee.

Organizers said the appearance of the vehicles can be customized, but all components from the kit must be used.

Racers can also use carts from previous years, provided they meet event requirements. Entry costs $150 for racers with an existing cart and $175 for those needing a build kit.

There are 40 spots available in the stock division.

Anyone older than 10 can enter the open division, where carts can be fully custom-built. Vehicles must be gravity-powered, have four wheels and weigh no more than 200 pounds.

There are 20 spots available in the open division. Organizers said it is expected to be made up mostly of adult racers. Entry is $150, or $500 for vehicles advertising a business.

The event is also looking for sponsors and volunteers. Anyone interested can visit the website to sign up.
